Remove ‘my sharing folders’ from explorer
I installed Messenger Live beta (the new MSN messenger 8) and didn’t like the new ‘my sharing folders‘ icon in my Windows Explorer.
So I searched how to remove/disable that icon…
If you have some sort of beta version, type this in your start > run:
regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.dll"
If you changed the MSN installationfolder, type that instead of the path.
Microsoft released their official version of Live Messenger, and Manuel found out that the filename has changed, Wearingseven discovered that the filename changes with every version… Use this command for the official version:
regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll"
where “xxx” is your version. (found in help > about Live Messenger)
Live Messenger received another update and it seems the “my sharing folders” are recreated every time when Live Messenger is launched with its default shortcut in the start menu or Quicklaunch. To work around this, create a shortcut to msnmsgr.exe yourself, and put that in place of the default one.
Thanks for the comments!
doesn’t work for me
Mmm .. stange. It works for me, and many others. Are you sure you have MSN Live Messenger (MSN 8 beta) installed?
Yes i’m sure. it gives me a RegSvr32 box saying “LoadLibrary(”C:\Program”) failed – The specified file could not be found”. It is where u said but that’s the error i get
Are you sure you copied that last “ ??
Oh, I see … Replace those quotation marks by ", I’ll edit it in the article too :)
Wow. that did it. thankx
No problem … If you left your email I could’ve contacted you sooner … luckily you checked this site again :)
Actually this site is the only one that had the answer i was looking 4. lol. But still thankx 2 u again
Worked fine for me, thanx.
Thanks. i’ve been looking to remove this for a while!
BIG Thanks for posting this.
Hate when programs add things like this.
thank you.
Thanks a ton. It bugged me a lot.
Worked Fine for me niggers
it works, thanks a lot for providing this piece of information.. keep up your good work.
thank you great tip
Cheers for that – only have MSN8 for my girlf, I hate it otherwise
wow this tip is really handy. THANKS a bunch you’re a savior! I’m grateful
your contribution has me very helped thanks
Worked great thank you very much.
omg thanks for spreading the love =) that folder was really bugging me
W00t, thanks so much.
thanks, works great :P
Thanks, works good.
Fantastic, well done!
THX
cheers mate…how did can one DIY a program of something else if it ever arises again. i know nero scout did the same thing and place a crappy folder in my computer as well as this..where does someone learn to amend this problem?
Hi all,
cant seem to get the command to work for me, am still getting the error msg of “LoadLibrary(”C:\Program”) failed – The specified file could not be found”. cld someone pls type out the correct command for me? thx alot!
It’s really that command, with these symbols: " and not these: ”
Did you copy that last " too?
Thanks a lot. It worked for me just fine. Keep up the good work
thanks
works for me, many thanks!
works for me too ta…
yeah real bummer when apps add crap ya dont want
big thanx from me too :)
Wow, thanks!
Tnx,it works!
regsvr32 -u “regsvr32 -u C:\\Program Files\\MSN Messenger\\fsshext.8.0.0787.00.dll”
For the official release of Live Messenger.
Thanks Manuel, I’ll add it to the original post!
The correct command is
regsvr32 -u “C:\\Program Files\\MSN Messenger\\fsshext.8.0.0787.00.dll”
Blame Wordpress to change those pesky ” into ” :) see! He did it again :)
The problem are not the quotes ! the problem is that between the quotes should be only the path to the dll file and nothing more
There should be the command followed by the switch and the path to dll between quotes.
So please correct the command at the top of the page. There should be like i said before:
regsvr32 -u “C:\\Program Files\\MSN Messenger\\fsshext.8.0.0787.00.dll”
(No double regsvr32 commands !!)
Ah, darn, didn’t see that, corrected, thanks!
And I was talking about the quotes, Wordpress keeps changing the " into a ” .
Worked for me!
worked great 100% with the latest 8.0.0787.00 version for me, thanks!
working.
Yeah it works great..Thanks a lot dude :)
just write
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0XXX.00.dll”
where XXX is ur Messenger version number…
its wrong the new version is
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0792.00.dll”
is u want to delete it
thanks 4 da head start though
Thanks a lot. It does word really!
I have tried for couple of days to find a solution to remove it.
Excellent!
I had already done the registry hack – the extremely simple one – of just going into regedit and searching for all instances of “my sharing folders” and deleting them (there’s 1 CLSID) – that removes the sharing folders shell extension from my computer itself.
However, it ALWAYS made a dead shortcut in my documents anyway though, and I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of that. Apparently it was that DLL which you, my good man, just showed me how to unregister!
Thanks a million!
NEWEST ONE
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0792.00.dll”
And if I want to put the shortcut back, what should I type?
Thanks
the same command without the -u
Thanks a lot. It works.
thanks!!! i so hate the my sharing folders in my computer!
Thank very much for sharing!!! I hate that thing on my computer too!!
Damn it! It comes back everytime Messenger upgrades itself – why oh why do Microsoft have to annoy me like this???
Doesn’t the most recent version of Live messenger has an option to disable those sharing folders once and for all?
shot g. Now me and my niggaz dont have to put up with this shit.
thanks a lot! it works!!
Thanks for the tip, what a piece of shit, Microsoft sucks so bad, they are the one’s who named it “My Computer,” why can’t they let it be?
Excellent! Glad to see the back of that. :)
Thanks!! First site on Google too!! Wish I had searched for this earlier
thank you for the tip.
well done!
Excellent, found this through good old google at #1
Well done on the quick, precise information.
Peace
I am from FLORIDA, USA and this is not working for me. I have the latest version at 8.0.0792.00 and I go to START > RUN > and then Open:
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0792.00.dll”
I do not get any error message, but then when I sign back into MSN Live the ‘My Sharing Folders’ comes back to My Documents.
What I’m I doing wrong?
I dropped the ’s’ and now I am typing this in:
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0792.00.dll”
After I press OK I get this message:
RegSvr32: DIIUnregisterServer in C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0792.00.dll succeeded.
But when I logON to MSN messenger Live, the folder returns.
Is that the latest version? I’ll install it on my machine too to test the sucker :)
Mmm … I just succesfully unregistred that DLL, and those Sharing Folders are gone. Even when I restart Live Messenger, or do it when it’s running.
If I were you, I’d uninstall Live Messenger completelu, even remove the folder in Program Files, reboot, freshly download it and install it again, reboot, unregister that DLL, reboot, and check if those Sharing Folders stay gone …
While on the subject of removing folders anyone know how to get rid of the NeroVision v. 4 and InterVIDEO WinDVD v. 7 folders that appear in My Documents anytime these applications ar eopened?
I just installed the WinDVD, but I don’t see any strange folders in ‘my documents’ … what folders are you talking about?
I am talking about the InterVideo folder found in My Documents which contains a WinDVD folder. I am using the InterVideo WinDVD version 7 application. Additionally do you know how to remove the NeroVision and NeroHome folders from MyDocuments? I just game up on Windows Live Messenger 8, I went back to using version 7.5, it loads faster anyway. Too frustrating. I had to re-install my ASPI layers because NeroVision wasn’t working properly. Its been a long long rainy Florida day.
Really really very strange … I installed the demo version of WinDVD7 and didn’t see any of those folders.
Next time I reboot my rig, I’ll check it again. (But maybe that’s not any time soon, my XP machine’s uptime is 1 month, 2 weeks ;) )
nice work thanks
Thanks SELDER, worked a treat.
thanks.. it works… personnally i really dont like the new messenger.. i rather use the 7.5..
what do u guys think??
I don’t even use MSN messenger, Miranda IM for president!
Talking about sharing folders, there are 2 instances of the darn thing. One is a shortcut in My Documents, and the other is the actual folder itself located in My Computer When i do the unregistering of the DLL, it only removes the folder under My Computer, but the shortcut remains in the My Document. If i deleted the shortcut, it always comes back after a computer reboot. Does anyone know how to remove the shortcut from the My Documents?
soooooo sweet! thanks very much.
wow that was fast thanks man “damn Icons all over the place”
Good work :-) Thanks for posting the tip!
hey guys they changed yet again probably because of this very forum. So go to the programs folder it is based in, find the dll name and replace the one in the command with that name, other then the naming scheme being changed it worked wonderfully for me as well.
Strange, I just installed build 0812, and there was still a fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll file in the MSN messenger folder?
Selder
Strange, I just installed build 0812, and there was still a fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll file in the MSN messenger folder?
For your information,it doesn’t delete the fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll file. it helps you to remove the “My Sharing Folders” in your “My Computer”.
HuLaLa, I was refering to the comment above, where Anonymous said “they changed it yet again“… I’d like to believe that of all people I should know what that command is for … I wrote the original article :p
How can I ever thank you? I could name my third born after you! Thanks again!!!
Thanks a lot, worked perfectly. Now I just need to remember for the future. ;)
Worked fine. Nice tweakie my version was live msn messenger with fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll.
Also kicked the logitech folders with it from the webcam proggy but its ok. never used them anyway :)
works perfect! also on a windows on german!! thanks!
very useful
Wow u guys are genius
thanks for that, everyone should email MSN and tell them to remove it or at least add an option too remove it.
BIG HUGE THANKS!!!! I HATED THAT. I MEAN HATED IT. IT JUST KEPT COMING BACK. THanks
Thank u!!!!
thanks!
hi,my msn version is build 8.0..812.00,i did exactly what u said, after i press enter, nothing hapens, not even an error msg,can some1 plz help me,coz this folder really is annoying
What happens if you run “regsvr32″ with no arguments?
thanks heaps!!!
hey boy youre a good fellow you know
thanks from bill gates
was trying to remove those craps over my persnal computer
hey thanks ;););););
Thanks a lot, I appreciate this. :)
If you get Cant fing folder “C:\Program” or something like that do this:
regsvr32 /u “%programfiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll”
xxx: is your version of MSN
example: regsvr32 /u “%programfiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll”
Oh and I forgot, if you want it back (dont ask me why :D) do the folowing:
regsvr32 “%programfiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll”
hey i stil have the dead shortcut. how do i remove it?
doesnt matter, done it!!!
worked for me, thanks mate
thanks ^^
worked for me as well, cheers
thnx dude, I hate those nasty registry hijackings of these programs, which modify system’s folders, shell menus(righ-click,SendTo,NewObject) without user’s decision.Programs like Messenger,Skype etc, should ask for user’s permission before they modify our settings. Cheers lads ;)
You should try ShellExView, maybe you can eliminate some more crappy right-click clutter …
Nice one thanks for that- that icon really bugged me!
Thanx a lot :D I have a My Computer toolbar at the top of my screen with my theme & folder icons being black.Having that icon among them stood out a mile & annoyed me as soon as I’d installed msn live.
Thanks a lot for sharing that knowledge. Looks like many of us appreciated it.
Hey. i cant seem to get rid of the sharing folder on my computer. Ive tried everything written in messages above but it still wont go away. I keep gettong a load library message or am told it cant find the file. Im not sure where im goin wrong. any advice you ccould give me would be a great help. my e-mail is c_o_s45@hotmail.com
There is really nothing to it, just copy the command in your start > run and all should go well …
much love, moment i saw it i went straight to google and searched how to remove it, glad to find a solution that works first go :)
Worked for me – thx
Thanks mate
Thanks a lot, worked great for version 812 as well.
Thank you!!! Worked for my version 812 as well! I had asked the Messenger site to help with this, PFFT! That’s why I ended up here! Thank you once again!
Thank you! Worked perfectly in non-english MSN / WinXP. Crazy people at ms, thinking our PCs are public severs… tsk tsk…
P.S.: Obviously, “Program Files” should be replaced for the actual folder name in other languages of WinXP for this to work, or just use the %programfiles% string.
P.S.2: For the ones reporting the folder keeps coming back, try to deactivate shared folder in MSN options.
hiii… does anyone else have the problem that after deleting my sharing folders out of my computer, the friggin shortcut is still in my documents??!! helpp mee! :(
Tara, did you try selecting it and hitting “delete” on your keyboard? ;)
THANK YOU!!! haha! got rid of the bastard!
Ok, after reading all of this page, and typing in code after code, it still is giving me a message that reads: The module “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.dll” was loaded but the call to DllUnregisterServer failed with error code 0×80070005.
I have Windows Vista. RC1
Next time I reboot, I’ll boot into Vista and try it out myself … maybe the command “regsvr32″ has a different command line option to unload a DLL…
Try running “regsvr32 /?” in a command prompt window, and did you try doing it as administrator, and not with an account having administrative privileges?
yessss i did try delete :P but it keeps coming back!! :( try delete pfffft haha any other suggestions?
thanks, worked for me! :)
Im using the 8.1 beta on a Swedish XP SP2 and i used this line:
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0106.00.dll”
and for english it would be:
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0106.00.dll”
Works like a charm :) thanks..
ehh.. it should be ” Program Files ” on the second line :) sorry
You may as well delete the following registry key and it will instantly dissapear
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{FC9FB64A-1EB2-4CCF-AF5E-1A497A9B5C2D}
Once your mouse has selected that key… check on the right pane where the default reg value is … and see that is says “Messenger Sharing Folders” if thats not it … it is some of the surrounding RegKeys… Enjoy!
True, the above should work too, but I would prefer to unregister the DLL, so it doesn’t load when my XP boots… I don’t know if deleting the registrykey does the same (but it does indeed remove the icon too)
Latest As of NOv 23 2006
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll
100 % working Confirmed
Copy past the following to RUN
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll
What does that -s do?
Ah, just to surpress the message if the unregistring failed … nice, now you’ll have to guess if it worked or not :)
regsvr32 -u “%programfiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll”
This works on most os’s :)
True, just untill MS decides to change the filename again :)
YES die folder die and don’t come back
Pff thanks for the info. That folder was starting to get on my nerves :))
took me a little jiggling but worX great… u da bomb mate
kia mau te wehi
cheers dude
yay. i never make my bed but i am so ANAL about my computer.
thanks!
Undertow, haha! hilarious!
Hm, doesn’t work again. I think MS may have changed something.
I just downloaded Live Messenger today…
James, if you would just search for files with “fsshext” in it, what files do you find?
Uhrm. I just downloaded and installed Live Messenger and it still works … I’m guessing that you’re doing it wrong :)
I’ve got this file: fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll
so i did this:
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll”
this has worked for me before, but i’m on a new xp install.. not sure why it doesn’t work now :(
Works great. If you are doing this from the command line (cmd from start->run), you will have to change it slightly. This is how it must look to work there: regsvr32 -u C:\Progra~1\MSNMes~1\fsshex~1.dll
This works regardless of the version because it only cares about the fsshex part of the file. That might help for some of you who don’t know the version.
James, remove that “-s” from your command, you should see its messages. Maybe the DLL is unregistred successfully, but the icon is still there, you can just delete it like a normal icon after running the command.
shazzam!!! worked like a charm
Here you go new code …
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll”
I will try to post it …when it changes …
just send me an email when it changes ….
What’s new about that code? It is exactly the same as in the article? :p
if you struggle and can’t get the quotes right, just start a dos command window, change to the installation fodler and do the regsvr32 -u fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll and nothing more. done and done.
thx it worked
i just used what you had up there, copy and pasted and put in my version number… like you said,
BRILLIANT!! Merry Christmas and thanks so much!!
I used the command above … IT WORKS…… However, the shortcut in My Docs keeps coming back……..WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keeps coming back, or was never gone? Tried manually deleting it (you know, selecting it and pressing ‘delete’ on your keyboard) :)
Maybe tick “don’t use sharing folders” in your MSN client?
I have tried to manually delete it however, when i quit (close) MSN Messenger, and later on “sign in” again …. the shortcut comes back.
P.S. Thanks for the quick reply
It’s been ages since I’ve had MSN Messenger (or Live Messenger) installed on my system, but isn’t it possible to disable those sharing folders in the options from MSN Messenger itself? Smells to me that MSN Messenger is trying to re-initialise those sharing folders, even when the DLL is unregistred…
This is good. I hate My Sharing Folders and never used it once. Good work, I appreciate it.
Thanks a lot. worked fine with 812 :D
I’ve removed it per the instructions above, and it keeps coming back too…
I had been manually deleting it, but was hoping for a more permanent fix. :(
I personally HATE the sharing folder, is there anyway of removing the shortcut once the procedure above has been carried out??
I tried deleting it manually ……. buit it comes back the next time i sign in.
I also have version 812.
Thanks.
Maybe search the options in MSN Messenger itself to disable those sharing folders?
nice! worked for me, had to change the name of the dll file as it had a bunch of extra crap on the end of the filename.. but it worked
dumb m*fuckin folder! thanks so much i hate when applications put in shit like that. i never even use sharing folders.
I checked in the options – all you need to do is: Tools>Options>Sharing Folders and un-tick ‘Use sharing folders instead of sending one file at a time’.
But does that remove the “my sharing folder” from Windows Explorer?
Works BEAUTIFUL for me!!! THANKS!!!
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll”
How on earth did you figure that out pal? Thanks for the help. I did the same earlier my editing the registry. Your way is handy than mine. Cheers mate.
yep, this one is gold from command prompt:
regsvr32 -u C:\Progra~1\MSNMes~1\fsshex~1.dll
thanks all
many thanks, worked a treat!
For people running Visa or not logged in as an admin, run cmd.exe as an administrator then type or paste the command in that should fix it.
thank you very much Selder!
On the subject of deleteing unwanted folders that keep coming back, can anyone get rid of the Nerovision folder that won’t get out of my documents? I have Nero 7 Essentials, came with a new comp.
thanks a bunch
I recently installed my system again, but only installed the “burning rom” part of Nero 7, not al the rest of the crap …
sweet thanks =)
Anyone using Windows Vista (any version) and recieving the error messege 0×80070005 you need to turn off the UAC feature in control panel under the user account section, reboot and run the same command.
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.dll[insertversionnumber]“
Works like a charm!
I’d also mention I just stumbled upon this site and like the no-nonsense approach. So, many thanks.
you won’t need to turn off UAC in vista … just type in CMD in the search bar, wait until the command prompt shortcut is displayed then right click > run as administrator and type the command in the dos prompt
Worked Well thanks !
Hello,
I am facing a small problem with Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0812.00. After opening the main MSN Messenger window, it’s taking long time to print my user name after typing, to make my point clear, there is lot delay between typing my user name and printing the same on the user name tab (passwd field is working as usual).
Can you please help me ???
Thanks,
Chetan
worked, but had to change the bit in between the fsshext. and the .dll to the file I had in the MSN Messenger folder. But worked once that was changed!
Chetan, I don’t know, maybe reinstall/clean Live Messenger?
it dont work for me!
it dont work for me! HOW SAD!
Bad News…
Micro$oft have become wise; the latest update (Build 8.1.0178.00) automatically replaces the dll every time you restart Messenger.
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll”
Looks like we need another work-around.
Don’t use the shortcut Messenger creates as this will re-install the dll.
Instead, go to the Messnger directory and create your own shortcut from there.
it works! thnx
i thought u had to go to the “msn live” folder but no msn messenger
my version was fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll
we are eternally grateful… : D
works perfect
If messenger is running in the system tray right click it and chose exit to close it.
Next click Start then Run and copy and paste the line below and hit enter.
Next navigate to C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger and find the file called msnmsgr.exe. Right click it and choose send to desktop (create shortcut).
Rename the new shortcut Windows Live Messenger. Right click it and choose copy. Next navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and paste the shortcut. It will ask if you wish to overight the original one, choose yes and BINGO! it’s gone forever.
Thanks, might come in handy for those who still run Live Messenger ;)
Thanks a lot for this, MSN is my preffered IM, but i hate the crap like that that microsaft adds in, typical, thanks a ton for the help.
For anyone who is still wondering how to get the shortcut to permanently disappear from My Documents, you have to hold Shift down while deleting it. That worked for me.
When I go run I get a box that says open before the box, and browse after the box. When I type in
regsvr32 -u -s “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll”
the run box disappears and nothing happens. Could anyone help me out with this?
I just tried from command prompt
regsvr32 -u C:\Progra~1\MSNMes~1\fsshex~1.dll
Worked a treat.
Thought I’d let you all know
That -s in your first attempt means “run this command silently”, so no popups if it failed or succeeded ;)
thanks,
Billy the kid
um i have messanger 8.1 and on windows vista so i dont have ‘run’ on my computer
if u could help i would greatly appreciate that!
Just type it in the searchbox of the brand spanking new start menu, or go through your options and enable the run box…
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll
worked for me
just went to “About Messenger” and put my “8.1.0178.00.dll” version and the “succeeded” message came up. I pressed F5 and the folder was gone.
THANKS!
this dosen’t work for me. I typed in:
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll”
substituting the xxx for the version number. I am using Widnows vista home premium 32bit and i get the following error message:
The module “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll” was loaded but the call to DllUnregisterServer failed with error code 0×80070005
Any suggestions?
No clue, didn’t run into that problem on any of my Vista machines… Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling Messenger will help?
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll” worked for me. My OS = WinXP SP2.
One question, though: This fix successfully removed the “My Sharing Folders” from “My Computer”, and also cleared the Target of the shortcut in “My Documents” (although the shortcut itself had to be deleted manually). However, the shortcut used to actually point to the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\\Sharing Folders
(which is probably an alias for the “My Sharing Folders” in “My Computer”, or something), and *this* particular directory didn’t get deleted by the fix. Is it safe to delete it, or should it be left alone?
Also, another website recommended using TweakUI to effect the same result (simply uncheck the box next to “My Sharing Folders” under the “My Computer” options). I didn’t do that because I didn’t know whether doing that treated the symptom or the underlying disease, so to speak. After running regsvr32 -u, that option simply disappeared from the TweakUI menu, so I’m assuming that this (regsvr32) is the better way to go. Any thoughts?
The “other website” that I mentioned regarding TweakUI is:
http://winhowto.blogspot.com/2006/08/fixed-remove-my-sharing-folders-from.html
I don’t know what the TweakUI thing does (but I do think it is exactly the same as the registry fix on the winhowto blog, it just removes the registry key), but if you want my opinion, the regsrv32 is the best option here. Using the regsrv32 option, the complete “my sharing folders” is unloaded from memory, and not just hidden.
oh, and that directory in Local Settings is safe to delete.
oh, and Miranda IM > Windows Live Messenger
Oops. That directory path should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\USER-ID@hotmail.com\Sharing Folders
(I posted this earlier, but I guess it didn’t get submitted properly.)
That too, no harm in deleting that folder.
this is the code for the newest type of msn
regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll
newest regsvr32 -u “C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\fsshext.8.5.1302.1018.dll”
I ran the command for the latest version (8.5.1302.1018), but now, everytime I start MSN, it reconfigures/reinstalls the missing key in registry and ‘My Sharing Folders’ keeps coming back. What to do?
Delete the shortcut you are using to start MSN Live Messenger, and create a new one – browse to the EXE and right click to “create shortcut”.
Already tried that one, but MSN keeps recreating a new shortcut as it recreates the key in the registry.
Hmm, could it have something to do with System Restore maybe?
No, system restore will never revert to a previous system state on its own.
Hm. Strange things, that new-shortcut trick worked with previous versions. There is no new option in the Live Messenger options to enable or disable those pesky mt sharing folders?
Or otherwise (but not advisable) change the registrt value to something “not working”, and then play with the security on that key, so that the system account doesn’t have any rights to it.
Have also tried with A-Patch now – same result. Is there any other solution other than mixing with user/system rights?
Worked like a charm, THANK YOU!
Just make sure the fsshext.8.0.0xxx.00.dll numbers match that of the .DLL file located in C/Program Files/MSN Messenger
For example, mine happened to be fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll
Good Luck!
All this info is good and correct FOR OLDER VERSIONS. But look at what’s going on here, and you’ll see that all you have to do is make sure the location if the fsshext file is correct and the name is correct. SO FIND THE FILE! In the latest version I used the statement:
regsvr32 -u C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\fsshext.8.5.1302.1018.dll”
I see there is a set of quotes missing! But this worked….just realize that everything past the regsvr32 -u is nothing more than the location of this dll file.
this one helped me a lot:

For this to work on Vista, you must open Command Line, type “cd C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\” (cd = change directory) and then type the normal command from there, seems like Vista has some sort of problem with using relative paths, one step foward, two steps back!
Unfortunately, none of the above worked for me. The “my sharing folders” must have been created in some other way on my system.
Tweak Ui only deleted it out of My Computer but left it in Explorer. Unregistering the dll didn’t work nor did renaming the dll file. What finally got rid of the annoying piece of Sh!!! was to delete the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{FC9FB64A-1EB2-4CCF-AF5E-1A497A9B5C2D}]
@=”Messenger Sharing Folders”
I hope this relieves someone else’s frustration if none of the above works!
