Disable System Beep in Windows Vista
There has to be a law somewhere against that loud system beep on Windows Vista, because it’s so loud it has to be illegal! But don’t worry, I’ll show you how to disable the system beep once and for all.
Head down to your device manager, and click Show hidden devices in the View menu. Browse to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers and on the top of that list there will be a device called Beep. Dive down in its properties and you’ll see something like this:
If you see those orange ellipses I think it’s safe to say you don’t need any further explanation, no? :)
This doesn’t work in VMwares of VirtualPCs though, if you have installed a virtual soundcard in them, repeat the above procedure ‘in’ those virtual machines.
Thank you!
Ha! cool, I wasn’t sure if that beep was annoying someone else too :)
Many thanks! It took a while, but then I decided it had just annoyed me for too long :)
Excellent! I was getting soooooo sick of that beep. Many thanks!
It even works in XP and 2000 too :)
Thank you, I thought it was the “System speaker” I was supposed to disable, but it’s not, it was this hidden device. I don’t know why they even have “hidden devices” – if you’re using Device Manager, I’d hope you more or less know what you’re doing.
wohooooo your a star those beeps are bloomin annoying.
im using xp media edition and have tryed everything and this has finally fixed it.
thankyou soooooo much..
i have added a link to this page to my link directory
thank you thank you thank you. vista continues to piss me off, but you’ve helped salvage it – at least for today
Thank you! The beep was driving my seizuric cat crazy (and me too).
Thank you man!
Yes!!!! Many thanks.
thank u very much for this tip….
Ahhh, now my laptop is quiet again. Thanks!
THANK YOU
Thank you thank you thank you! My frazzled nerves are back to normal now!
Great! I even cut the cable to the internal speaker on my old XP PC – now I won’t have to loose the garanty on my new Dell PC – doing the same :-)
thank you. the silence is beautiful.
And just when I was beginning to think there’d be no way ever to get rid of the anoying Microshaft Windblows Vista Beep Enhancement feature….. Thanks a dozen, Kevin of Trail
thank you, silence is golden….
THX. Finaly some silence
I can only hear that beep through my headset not through the speakers.. if i plug headset directlrly to the sound card i cant hear it.. disabling that didnt help any other suggestions?
this rocks, I knew it had to be bothering other as well…
thank you very much!
i tried this method (the device manager) and also going to the registry…right now both are configured to stop the beep. i’m on a new ibm z61t. the beep is STILL going off. it goes off when the computer is going into standby, and also coming back from standby. please…some help!??!?
Thanks alot. I just installed Vista and it beeped almost every second. This helped.
You’re my hero, thanks for finding and posting this.
THANK YOU!!! One of my MAJOR annoyances is that some programmes I had been using for years under previous versions of Windows, beeped incessantly in Vista.
Xnews, for instance, beeped whenever I read a new article. As I use it a lot, this was really getting on my nerves. This fixed my problem within seconds!!
[...] reveals the solution. I can’t claim this as one of my own solutions, therefore I’ll link to the site I got it [...]
you are a godsend and to think when I first saw your pic of the properties box I thought it was a fake…. Thank YOU
help! i followed these instructions and it kept coming back each time i rebooted. i finally uninstalled it… and it’s still there. how do i get rid of it now????
I wouldn’t recommend uninstalling it, since it’s a system device, who knows what other services depend on it.
Are you sure you have “disabled” it?
Thanks so much! silence at last!
Ahhhh. My blood pressure is returning to normal! Thanks.
You are a GOD, dude! It was so ANNOYING. Imagine in a research library, everyone’s almost dead, and BEEP, BEEP, i could get killed because of this…
thanks so much. God bless you if any. :-)
Thanks a lot! I’m appreciating the peace and quiet. (As are the others in my office.)
I don’t mind the system beep going off as a low battery alarm or the like, but too many applications chose this beep over the sound card&speakers. (I wonder why Vista does that. I’ve had Vista for only a week and have run into more problems than I ever did with XP. Let’s hope the service pack adresses these issues!)
i’m sorry, but Vista is as borked with SP1 as without :/
Finally, the answer to the problem that was killing me!
I can’t thank you enough ;)
I have a hole organisation who thanks you……
god level post
thanks!
Ok – so what happens when you go to Device manager, show hidden devices, and there is no Beep device? HELP!
Then you must’ve looked over it … it has to be there :p
nope – vista 64 bit, device manager – show hidden deviecs – i have been through it over and over again – lots of hidden devices, but no Beep.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound]
“Beep”=No

http://blogs.technet.com/richardsmith/archive/2007/07/17/useful-registry-changes-during-build-creation.aspx

I thank you so much!
Great thanks!
it’s like Mircosoft TRIES to make the new operating more annoying
nice
The beep was so annoying, so corrosive to productivity, and the controls for turning it off so well-hidden that I find myself thinking that it must have been installed as a deliberate attempt to punish users for buying a Microsoft computer. Maybe the programmer who installed it was a fan of “Harrison Bergeron”
I love you, seriously, you should be covered in gold
Mucho gracias!
Thanks, this sound actually hurt my ears. It was not annoying. It hurt.
thanks :)
Thank You VERY MUCH. It was annoying to me as well as everyone around me.
Not any more.

it was soooo annoying, when i wanted to save a document in a certain existing folder there came immediately a shocking scary beep, like if i had something done really bad to the system
i cannot understand how they sell laptops with this annoying beep installed.
it was always so shocking when that beep came
so thanks for that one
Jeisa
I just bought new headphones (to listen to music) and my old ones amplified the beep only slightly. Now w/ my new headphones, it was so loud I almost screamed, “ACK!” at school. THANK GOD for your help. I was going deaf listening to that stupid BEEP. *Bowing down in praise*
It annoys the entire world and finally I remove the most stupid feature in Windows.

YOU ARE A GENIOUS
YOU are the Man (or Woman)!!!!!! That fixed that anoying BEEP. Thanks!
Thank you and “Dankeschön” from another German driven half-insane by the malicious beep. Searching for “soulseek AND beep” brought me here.
Many thanks. It still annoys me that MS make it so difficult to stop the beeps. Why the mystery?
Thanks man, such a simple solution for so much annoiance.
That’s a really annoying sound! I made it mute using this trick:
http://www.myhowtoos.com/en/windows-howtoos/78-how-to-remove-a-beep-sound-on-the-laptop

Never expected Google to find the answer this easily.
As if you need another thanks. But, just goes to prove the Internet is an amazing tool. You can find an answer to usually anything, and quickly too.
Thanks for taking your time to post this. helped me too :D
Cheers fella!!!! This sound was the most annoying sound i’d ever heard(and i work in a music studio ,which alot of very un-talented idiots use).My ears thankyou from the bottom of my heart.

I think its so funny that there are sooooo many people who are just as annoyed as I have been for the last 2 years. It truly is the most annoying , most piercing and startling sound in my known universe. Thank you, and Praise GOD for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I only got the beep when I was using the Windows Explorer “OPEN” box. Each time I click on a file, it beeped. So far it doesn’t matter which application I am using. Everytime I beep click filename the beep thing made a beep. I was going beeping mad. Do you think google pay microsoft to really really really really really really really anoy us. BEEP you B Gates for another useless function.
SILENCE … Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I LOVE YOU!!!!! I was getting to the smashing point ….
Unfortunately it didn’t work for me … I found a solution though at: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/How-do-I-turn-off-Sleep-Hibernation-Startup-Beeps-and-Sounds/m-p/51347#M3935
Genius!

It was getting annoying as for some reason every time I bring MS Access to view it would Beep. AHHH F*#K off
Now, its good, no beeps, except that one coming from the round red Fire alarm on the wall.
You are the man! I pasted 200 rows with the incorrect rowId into SQL2008 over remote Desktop and this beeping lasted for about a minute and a half. SQL has to beep for every row!@? Thanks to you, it’s gone…. Awesome post.
Another thanks added to the list. I’m glad to have finally eradicated a problem that probably left my Japanese neighbors wondering more than a few times what had just woke them at 2:00 in the morning. God bless!
Thank you so much from paris !!!!!!
man, my computer beeps every 30 or so seconds….i checked hidden devices under device manager and there is no beep at all……i did real all above….typed in and ran sc stop beep then typed sc config beep start= disabled, both didnt work………..any ideas?
please dismiss the above post about beeps every 30 seconds…it was my smoke alarm battery dying right behind my computer……sheesh
thanxxxxxxxx man
Aaaaa at last, getting rid of this annoying beep. Thanks
beep’s dead :D
Another hint: if you are getting beeps on a rdp terminal session, run NET STOP BEEP on your LOCAL computer to prevent the remote computer from sending its nefarious beeps through the internets to you.
