Disable System Beep in Windows Vista

There has to be a law somewhere against that loud system beep on Windows Vista, because it’s so loud it has to be illegal! But don’t worry, I’ll show you how to disable the system beep once and for all.

Head down to your device manager, and click Show hidden devices in the View menu. Browse to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers and on the top of that list there will be a device called Beep. Dive down in its properties and you’ll see something like this:

Beep device Windows Vista

If you see those orange ellipses I think it’s safe to say you don’t need any further explanation, no? :)

This doesn’t work in VMwares of VirtualPCs though, if you have installed a virtual soundcard in them, repeat the above procedure ‘in’ those virtual machines.

Thank you, I thought it was the “System speaker” I was supposed to disable, but it’s not, it was this hidden device. I don’t know why they even have “hidden devices” – if you’re using Device Manager, I’d hope you more or less know what you’re doing.

I don’t mind the system beep going off as a low battery alarm or the like, but too many applications chose this beep over the sound card&speakers. (I wonder why Vista does that. I’ve had Vista for only a week and have run into more problems than I ever did with XP. Let’s hope the service pack adresses these issues!)

The beep was so annoying, so corrosive to productivity, and the controls for turning it off so well-hidden that I find myself thinking that it must have been installed as a deliberate attempt to punish users for buying a Microsoft computer.
